Special Education

Many students who qualify for special education services are supported by our Special Education Resource Teachers (SERT). SERTs provide a wide range of services to students including reading, writing, mathematics, emotional/behavioral skills, social skills, functional and adaptive skills and/or vocational skills. These services may be provided in small-group instruction or in their general education classroom. SERTs provide direct skills instruction in the student’s area of need. Parents and staff develop an IEP for each student based on their learning needs. 

Burroughs has two classrooms that serve students on the autism spectrum in a highly specialized environment. Students in this program are provided service by ASD teachers and additional special education staff. 

Special education instruction for students on the autism spectrum may include general accommodations, or may emphasize functional academics in daily and independent living, communication, community participation, recreational and leisure, work and work-related skill development to give students the ability to live as independently as possible in their lives as they move through and beyond PK-12+ education. Inclusivity is based on student strengths, interests, and modified outcomes and grading will be determined at each student's IEP meeting on an annual basis. 

Related Services are defined in the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) as “transportation and such developmental, corrective, and other supportive services as are required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from special education.”
