Enrichment
Lego League
In late summer, FIRST LEGO League releases a Challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. Each Challenge has three parts: the Robot Game, the Project, and the FLL Core Values. Teams of up to ten children, with at least one adult coach, participate in the Challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game), developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project), all guided by the FLL Core Values. Teams may then attend an official tournament, hosted by our FIRST LEGO League Partners. Past Challenges have been based on topics such as nanotechnology, climate, quality of life for the handicapped population, and transportation. By designing our Challenges around such topics, participants are exposed to potential career paths within a chosen Challenge topic, in addition to solidifying the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) principles that naturally come from participating in the program. Team members also learn valuable life and employment skills which will benefit them no matter which career path they choose.

Chess Club
Each year on Fridays from November to March, students can sign up to meet after school to play chess, learn chess moves, and have fun. Typically, signup is open in late autumn for the winter season. This is a fun interactive hour for students to learn chess for the first time, or master new chess moves.
Math Club
Math Club is open to 4th and 5th graders at Burroughs who are interested in solving complex problems, working as a group, and having fun with math! Math Club meets the first 12 weeks and last 12 weeks of school (when Chess club is not meeting) on Tuesday mornings. This club is intended for students who have a genuine love of math and like to solve problems in their free time. Enrollment information comes through classroom teachers and caregiver newsletters prior to the start of each session.
